KNBR’s Brian Murphy and Carlos Beltran

May 17, 2012

With Carlos Beltran and the St Louis Cardinals in town, there has been a lot of talk regarding Beltran’s tenure with the team and the decision by Giants management not to resign the Outfielder. One of the stranger angles taken on this issue has been by KNBR’s Brian Murphy. The last few days his tweets regarding Beltran have boiled down to this “He sucked in August…was responsible for the collapse of the team”. Here are his tweets:

Here is Carlos Beltran’s August line: .300/.323/.450.  Does this look like somebody who sucked in August?  As @logandobson pointed out, the rest of the team hit .235/.287/.348 for the month.  Despite going on the DL and missing 14 games in the middle of the month, Beltran was the second or third most productive hitter for the team in August. Despite his “Horseshit” August, Beltran absolutely destroyed the ball in the month of September hitting .378/.434/.700.

I’m hoping Mr. Murphy’s delusion about Beltran’s tenure with the team stems from a reliance on counting stats and/or a memory of a bad at-bat Beltran had in early August. If this isn’t the case, we might want to examine the possibility that this drivel is pure Pro-Baer propaganda in response to an amazing start by the hitter that the Giants failed to resign this offseason.
